Highlights of SLE 2017

Singapore Latin Extravaganza (2017) held it’s very first dance festival pool party in Singapore. Dancing outdoors in the tropical climate, cool breeze and warm sunlight by the poolside, it was a picturesque dreamy moment to remember for the dancers who attended the event. SLE saw the debut of Brenda Liew’s new choreography by BLDC (Brenda Liew Dance Company) Professional Team. BLDC is putting Singapore on the map in Asia with her cutting edge latin ladies shines franchise that has expanded to Taiwan. Zachery Pang’s heartfelt post on facebook saw the unity of teachers coming from different dance studios to perform a Afro Cuban Shines choreography that marked a milestone in the community spirit of latin dance in Singapore. In Zachery words, “Performing together are mere gestures to create a livelier local dance community. I think it is in ALL our interests to create an open, inclusive, captivating dance community to keep both the current and new generation of performers/social dancers captivated and engaged.” SLE saw the return of the annual tradition of sensual guy on guy bachata dancing with ZeeRaj making head waves within the community. It is widely popular with #zeeraj on social media. It inspired countless of videos by other artists who seek to emulate in their legendary footsteps.   Follow Singapore Latin Extravaganza on Facebook for the dates of this annual event.     Written by Averral Lim   Share...
Zee – How I started dancing and my dream to share the gift of dance

Zee – How I started dancing and my dream to share the gift of dance

Wee Tze Yi (Zee) is the organiser of Asian West Coast Swing Open and Singapore Latin Extravaganza. He shares how he started dancing and his desire to grow the dance community. How did you start dancing? When I was a teenager, my mom brought my family to a social dance club. I was rather reluctant to attend the event as a boy who does sports, it didn’t seem appealing to dance nor wear shiny costumes. After the workshop, I was impressed by watching people improvising and freestyling on the dance floor. A girl on the dance floor caught my attention and I danced with her. That’s the pivotal moment when I fell in love with social dance. I had a change in perception that social dancing was in fact, a great experience to meet people. What were the struggles you faced when you started dancing? I started learning social dance while I was in the army. In army camp, social dance wasn’t well understood nor accepted amongst my army buddies. It didn’t help that I was serious about practising and committed to practising my dance moves while in the army camp. They would make fun of me for dancing in camp and called me names. It wasn’t easy to put up with. It was rather challenging to deal with criticism and negative feedback from my peers. But I was determined to push through and continue what I loved doing despite my circumstances. How did you overcome your struggles and continue on? I started teaching dance at a small dance studio, but I never envisioned myself to do big things...

Kizomba Extremo II ft Kwenda Lima by Montage Events

Organisers Montage Events (www.montage.com.sg) Date: February 24, 2016 – February 28, 2016 RSVP and Event Details: https://www.facebook.com/events/1453838084925330/ ABOUT Kwenda Lima was born in Cape Verde in 1977. He is an accomplished dancer and choreographer. He has worked on various projects and has more than 10 years of experience in teaching traditional and modern couple dances from Angola and Cape Verde. His unique command of style and musicality has made him one of the world’s most sought after teachers of the Angolan dance form kizomba. Additionally, he has been developing a very personalized project, Kaizen Dance, which touches people’s hearts and souls through the unification of West African kinetic principles with philosophical approaches drawn from Indic and Buddhist thought. With his dance company, he is also building up a repertoire of contemporary African dance, including, most recently, the thought-provoking work Muloma (Let Us Be United). Kwenda is currently living in Lisbon, and teaching at kizomba festivals and salsa weekends all over the world, at which he regularly conducts kaizen workshops as well. In another life, Kwenda also obtained a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Kingston University in London; he believes in having carried over (and transformed) engineering’s basic principle of creating comfortable conditions for human existence, into his current work with kaizen dance. His charisma and generosity in teaching is an inspiration for all those who are touched by his practice. http://kwendalima.com/ http://dancemefree.com/tag/kwenda-lima/ https://www.facebook.com/KwendaLima.KaizenDance Share...
